Jet Set Body: The Results

By Kim · December 3, 2009 · Filed in Jet Set Body, Looking Your Best · 3 Comments »

On August 9, 2009 I made a commitment to myself. On that day, with the urging on my husband I made the decision to compete in the upcoming Ms. Bikini America National Championships. I had tons of reasons why NOT to do it, but I made the commitment anyway. Just in case you missed Jet Set Body Part 1, here’s the link.

My Team ~ The Savage Girls

My Team ~ The Savage Girls

Six Weeks Out From Showtime!

My last blog regarding my results was in early October ‘09. I had proudly lost 8.5 lbs and many inches. I had done well, I had the experience and the background to do this. But at that point, my goal shifted. I wanted to not only compete at the Ms. Bikini America Championships, now I wanted to make the Top 10 in my division! This is when I hired fitness competition guru Cathy Savage and her team to whip me into fitness competition shape during the last six weeks of pre-contest prep. You’ve probably seen Cathy on MTV’s Made. She’s the master when it comes to getting girls stage ready (FYI- She also has a lifestyle program for those who don’t want to compete, but just want the abs!). During the six week period, I sent Cathy’s team front and back check-in pictures weekly so they could determine the course of action in regard to my nutrition and exercise plans. Each week slight changes were made to allow the maximum results. There were days I felt exhausted and days I felt exhilarated. It was truly a challenging mental and physical journey.

Viva Las Vegas

On November 17, 2009 I boarded my flight to Viva Las Vegas with a cooler filled with cooked chicken breast, egg whites, sweet potatoes and asparagus. The best part of the flight was watching four or five super fit people with coolers presumably filled with chicken board the plane. By this point, I had done everything that I could to change my body, now it was time to have fun, enjoy the process, rock the stage and put my hard earned results to work.

The three-day event was filled with registration, media, photo shoots, spray-tan appointments and a final Savage Team meeting. At the start of the meeting, Cathy and her team of choreographers, nutrition experts and past winners watched as we all stripped down and walked one-by-one as we would on stage for a final critique. In line with the 75 other Savage Girls, I felt more nervous walking for my coaches than I expected I would the next morning in front of the judges. I guess this is the first time during the weekend that I’d be judged. I hadn’t been on a fitness stage in six years! At that point I was thinking “what have I gotten myself into”. Then, one of the coaches said next and it was my turn to walk. I pushed my nerves out of my head and reminded myself of the commitment that I made to myself and the goal that I had set to make the Top 10. If I couldn’t walk in an empty ballroom for my fitness-family, how would I be able to do it in front of the real judges and audience! As I was walking up, Cathy looked directly at me and said “You look amazing!”. That’s it, it’s all I needed to hear. No more nerves. The guru of fitness chicks just told me I looked amazing.

On Stage Bikini America 2009

Friday, November 19th, 6am ~ My alarm didn’t even need to go off because my body knew it was time to wake up. This was the day that I had been training for since August 9th. This is what every 5am cardio session and grilled chicken breast was for! Hair, make-up and I was ready. Backstage was a frantic place. I grabbed a quiet spot, put on my headphones and listened to my power song Kevin Rudolph’s “Let It Rock!”. My division was called and I was the 9th to go onto the stage. I was nervous, emotional, anxious and excited. My oh-so-supportive husband was sitting in the first row with some great friends that flew in for the event and my Mom who decided to surprise me in Vegas a few days earlier! I also knew I have the Team Savage in the audience getting ready to scream for me. From the moment my foot hit the stage, I was on. I gave it all I could in that moment. The best part was that I actually remember each of the 60 seconds, which in the past it’s always been a blur. But this time, I kept telling myself to enjoy the results of reaching my goal. As often, we set a goal and reach it, only to quickly set another. Not me, not this time. I was bound and determined to enjoy each and every minute of hearing that crowd cheer.

The Results Show

Saturday, November 20th, 10am ~ My division was called out onto the stage. We all showed up, ready to compete but only 10 of us would get the chance to walk the stage again today for the judges. This was the moment for me. This was my ultimate goal for this show, I wanted, no I needed, no I was going to make the Top 10. This is what I had on my vision board, this is what I had on my goal list, this is what I had in my brain over the last 12 weeks. It was in this moment that I would find out my fate. As we lined up on the stage, I definitely began to get a little nervous. The women that I competed against were stunning. But, I had no regrets, I can honestly say I did my best. Then announcer began… she called the first girl into the Top 10, wasn’t me, but still 9 more spots to go! Then I heard #93 Kimberly Murgatroyd! You would have thought that I just won an Olympic gold medal! I was beaming form ear to ear. I looked down and saw my husband and my Mom crying, which almost made me cry. I did it. I accomplished the goal that I set for myself, I made the Top 10.

Post-show I felt amazing. Especially as I ate a delicious Hershey’s Cordial Cherry Kiss! Looking back over the last 15 weeks, I realized a few things.

The Reward

1. I love the challenge of pre-competition diet and training. I love being able to create the physique that I want, when I want.

2. I love being on the stage. I enjoy the friendly competition. I love that it motivates me and gives me a goal to strive for each and every workout.

3. I love how my family, friends and team supports each other. From my daughter toughing it out through meals of chicken, my husband getting up for EVERY 5am cardio workout to my Mom & Dad planning the most amazing surprise. Support is key.

Going forward, I have already planned my competition schedule for 2010. First show is March 20, 2009! My goal has is to make the Top 5 in 2010. In addition, I will compete in the Fitness Division, which includes a 2 minute routine filled with dance, gymnastic, strength & flexibility.

This is something that I truly love to do. It challenges me every day. It challenges my will-power. It challenges my body. Life is about finding what you love to do and doing it. Don’t let excuses stand in your way of following your dreams in 2010. As we say, Excuses are over. It’s time to live!

The Jet Set Body: Part 1

By Kim · October 7, 2009 · Filed in Looking Your Best · 4 Comments »

It’s seems like the whole world is always chasing 5-15 lbs. When is the last time you hear someone say, honestly, I love my current weight and how my body looks? I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone say that! Even the sexiest bodies always want to improve something.

BAP

Millions of people every day use Google to search for the secrets to obtaining the perfect body. In fact, when doing research for this blog I came across something really interesting, however not very shocking. The word “diet plan” is searched 246,000 times a month (according to Google Keyword). Sounds like a lot right? These people are looking for the best diet plans to help them control their food intake and finally loose that weight for good. But, let’s be honest, we are in the age of instant information, instant coffee, drive through, immediate online tech support, download now and we want, what we want NOW! So, I checked how many times the word “diet pills” is searched… the result 1,500,000!!! And “diet pill” is 1,000,000!!!! That’s right, this shows that we have the “I don’t want to work for it, I want it now and even though it took me years to gain this 30, 40 or 100 pounds, I want it off TODAY, damn it!” mentality. Who wants to work hard, eat right and exercise when you can just take that magic little pill?

I’m the first one to admit that I’m always chasing a few pounds, but I know that a magic pill is not the answer. There is no magic formula or quick fix. Achieving the body that you’re after is all about hard work and dedication.

Here is my personal, recent weight gain & loss journey:

Unfortunately, traveling as often as Rob and I makes eating perfectly healthy and exercising a challenge. So, after spending almost a month dining on the French Riviera’s delicious, and often very rich cuisine, not to mention sampling an insane amount of local wine, we definitely packed a few on. After stepping on the scale post-French Riviera, we decided that with a 3 1/2 month long hiatus before our next trip, we had the perfect amount of time to get that fresh burrata and goat cheese off our booties. We committed together to following a 90 day diet and exercise routine, just as we have in the past, we decided to use the P90X system. Now, my degree is in Exercise Science, so I’m not new to this. Actually, Rob and I met in the gym. But for me, P90X just hits all the components of physical fitness and I love it. No, I don’t work for Beach Body, I’m not a coach or affiliate. I just LOVE to pass on the this that I love to help others!

Cheese in French Riviera

The Proof: Fresh Burratta, Bread & Wine

As we began our 90 diet & exercise plan, I thought, WTF, how did I let this happen? I used to win fitness competitions!!! I used to have a rockin’ body! Damn the cheese! Then, my husband in his infinite wisdom said, “You have 3 months, why don’t you compete again? Is there a show you could do?” At first, I dismissed the idea and began listing all of my excuses:

  • I haven’t competed in Fitness America in six years.
  • I’m too old (30 years old, yep, almost out of the regular division!)
  • It’ll be to constraining.
  • I won’t be able to train enough.
  • Blah, blah, blah, blah…..blah.

At the end of my rant, Rob said “Are you done with excuses? You can do this. I’ll do it with you, every step of the way. Except the part about being in a bikini on stage. That one I’ll leave to you.” I checked the Fitness America website and saw that the Ms. Bikini America Championships were only 14 weeks away. The name of the show is funny, yes, Ms. Bikini America, but I assure you, this is no Hooters Girl contest. These women are beautiful, smart, they are athletes and the competition is fierce!

Usually, I start at 12 weeks prior to showtime, but with the frommage of the French Riviera, two extra weeks of training and diet sounded like a gift from the heavens. With Rob’s support, I committed to stopping the excuses and making the commitment to be on stage in a tiny, tiny two piece in 14 weeks. Truth be told, I immediately felt a rush of excitement, but the anxiety made my stomach a little queasy. I’d have to get over it, because now, I was committed!

I’ve decided to put myself out there with this blog. This is not a narcissistic ploy for attention. My goal is to show you that even jet setters can go from muffin top to rockin’ hot! I hope this inspires you (if you need it) and gives you ideas of how to change your body (if you want them). I will be posting my before and after, but only once I achieve the final result. Who wants to just put the fat pic up?!!! Not me!!!!

Here is a sample of my diet & exercise starting 14 Weeks from Showtime:

**Note: This plan is my personal plan, not a prescription for anyone else!

Meal 1: 1/2c. Oatmeal with a scoop of Dessert Whipped Vanilla Protein Powder, 1/2 Grapefruit

Meal 2: 4 Egg Whites (hard boiled)

Meal 3: 4 oz. Rotisserie Chicken, 1 small Sweet Potato, Spinach

Meal 4: Dessert Whipped Vanilla Protein Shake, 1 tsbp Peanut Butter (blended with water & ice)

Meal 5: 4 oz White Meat Grnd Turkey Burger, 1/2c. Brown Rice, Asparagus

  • 3/4 -1 gallon Water every day
  • No alcohol (have taken 1 sip from Rob’s wine 2-3 times)
  • No Sugar or Cheat Day (lets be honest, I had a 1 month long cheat day, no need for me at this point!)
  • 6 days of P90X & 5 Days of 30 Precor Elliptical

As of this week I am officially half-way to my show date. I am  7 weeks out from my show exactly.

To date I have the following results:

Overall Weight Loss: 8.5 lbs

Chest: lost 2″

Waist (smallest part): lost 2″

Ab (this is that muffin top, love handle area): lost 4.5″

Hip (widest part of the booty): lost 1″

Thigh: lost 1″

Arm: lost 1″

This is only Part 1 of 3. S0, stay tuned….

The Brazilian Wax Exposed

By Kim · June 19, 2009 · Filed in Looking Your Best · 1 Comment »

The Brazilian wax is gaining widespread popularity in the Puritan founded culture of the USA. Believe it or not, ladies of all ages are going hair-free. And like anything else, not all estheticians are good at delivering a great Brazilian. Let’s face it, just because you can wax an eyebrow, doesn’t mean you have any business waxing my business. I feel like I’ve been around the block of Brazilian waxing and I can tell you from personal experience that if you mistakenly get someone who does not specialize in this type of waxing, you will be sorry. There are a lot of misconceptions, questions and a bit of taboo about getting a Brazilian.

Brazilian Bikini

The History of the Brazilian Wax

The oh-so-popular brazilian bikini wax had its beginnings on the beautiful beaches of Rio de Janeiro. It was in Rio where bathing beauties first donned the thong bathing suit, which required a thong-type-waxing to make it wearable. The date of the first brazilian waxing is unknown, but likely occurred in the 1970s or 1980s, in the sultry South American country of…you guessed it…Brazil.

How did this waxing technique arrive in the United States? Research indicates that credit for bringing Brazilian waxing to the U.S. goes to seven, Brazilian-born sisters. Their names are Jocely, Jonice, Joyce, Janea, Jussara, Juracy, and Judsela Padilha, also known as the “J Sisters”.

In 1986, the J Sisters opened a small waxing salon in New York, bringing with them the idea and the techniques to remove much or all of the hair in that region to make it possible to wear today’s thong underwear and thong bikini styles.
Many people use the different waxing style names interchangeably; they accidentally ask for a Brazilian wax when they really want a Hollywood wax, and vice versa.

Now that we know the history of being bare down there, lets get to the good stuff:

Wax by Andreia

To dispel the myths and get the facts, I sat down with Brazilian waxing expert and my personal Atlanta-based waxing pro, Andreia owner of Brazilian Wax by Andreia to get all your pressing questions answered.

Andreia Brazilian by Andreia

Can you explain the concept of Brazilian Wax by Andreia to someone who is unfamiliar with it?

We are Atlanta’s premiere waxing boutique.   No one likes the chore of shaving and tweezing.  I help my clients feel smooth and sexy by removing unwanted hair.  Our authentic Brazilian waxing is fast, affordable and comfortable.  My staff and I  provide a superior waxing experience by delivering extraordinary personal service and exceptional value.

How long does the process of Brazilian waxing take?

We’re fast! In my salon, a Brazilian wax takes less than 15 minutes.

How long does it last?

Often Brazilian wax is performed with wax and strips of cloth. This tends to break the hair instead of actually pulling it out at the root. However, because we use real Brazilian hard wax to pull the hair out by the root, our Brazilian wax last for 3-6 weeks.

What was the inspiration for bringing this service to Atlanta?

In Brazil, swimsuits are very small and hair removal is a way of life.  I started working at my Aunt’s salon when I was 13 and had been waxing for over 10 years before I came to America to visit Atlanta.  After meeting my husband and deciding to stay, I was surprised by many salons I saw that claimed to do Brazilian waxing that could not even POINT to Brazil on a map!  I decided to offer authentic Brazilian Waxing and we now serve thousands of clients a month at our 4 locations.

How is your Authentic Brazilian Waxing service different?

It is not what we leave, it’s what we take away.  Front, back or everything in between, it’s up to you.  We use imported organic hard wax from Brazil that goes on thick, smooth and warm where it enters the follicle, allowing the hair to be pulled out by the root.  Hard wax is much easier on the skin than stripes with sticky waxes, and results in less pain.  Most people are also surprised at how much faster we are able to finish their wax.

[Kim's Note: I've had both types of waxes in the past, the strips with wax and the hard wax that just cools and is peeled off. I can tell you that the hard wax makes all the difference in comfort. Plus, it really does leave you smoother and last longer!]

Are there any side effects? If so, how can they be prevented?

The most important part of Brazilian waxing is to make sure the person performing the service is trained well. In my salon, we’re experts in the Brazilian and it’s not just a side-business like it is in many salons. Every one of my girls is a licensed cosmetologist, however the training in school is often not good enough for my clients. I train all of my girls to perform this type of waxing just like we do in Brazil.

The most common side effect people experience is ingrown hairs. To prevent them, you should exfoliate the area often and refrain from using lotions on the area. In grown hairs can be treat by a topical such as Tenz Skin.

Because of the type of hard wax that I use, side effects are minimal. I can go over the same spot multiple times without causing discomfort or damaging the skin. When wax with cloth strips are used, damage to the skin is greater because your pulling not only the hair, but the skin is being aggressively exfoliated as well.

Who is your typical client?

You would be surprised at the variety of my clientele. We have all types of clients- students, business women, and more men are starting to come.  New clients are always made comfortable. Most are refereed by someone else or come after reading hundreds of online reviews.

To much of her competition’s dismay, Andreia only charges $35 for a Brazilian Wax!  How are you able to charge so much less than other salons?

Places often offer Brazilian waxing as a side product. But with me, it’s is my specialty. And we’re fast. I’ve been called Atlanta’s Queen of Wax because for me as a Brazilian – waxing is not a sideline, it’s my passion!

Finding the Perfect Bikini with Agustina, owner of Nina Swimwear

Agustina Palacio

Agustina Palacio: Owner/Designer Nina Swimwear

I am a self-proclaimed bikini-aholic. I have more swimsuits than I know what to do with, just ask my husband. And honestly, it’s never enough. I’m constantly searching the globe for new styles, colors and designs. I love mixing and matching my colors and styles. Yet, it was not until I began visiting South America that I realized that if there was such a place as “Bikini Heaven”, this would be it! The beaches of Punta del Este and Rio de Janeiro were filled with the best bikinis (and bodies) that I had EVER seen. I thought that obviously it was the body that made the bikini look great. And that may be true, but as I spent more time on these beaches, I began to realize that these bikinis looked great on even non-perfect Brazilian and Argentine bodies. At that moment I did what any normal girl would do, I hunted down top South American bikini designers and soon they became my favorites! One of my absolute favorites for a sexy, high end, perfectly fitting, unbelievably well made bikini is Nina Swimwear.
The owner and lead designer Agustina Palacio is one of the hottest swimwear designers in the world. Woman everywhere covet her swimsuit designs year after year. And I was lucky enough to get her to answer all the questions that my jet set ladies have regarding choosing the perfect swimsuit.

How did you start designing swimwear?

I always loved swimsuits since I was very little. I used to take one piece of a bathing suit and put it to another. Also I used to wear a different top with a different bottom and I was only 7 years old!! By the age of nine I designed my first bikini and ask my mom to get someone who could sew it. But, I didn’t start designing till I moved to Miami when I was 20. I felt that there was nothing to buy. So it was there where I started up my business.

Nina Swimwear is always able to create and stay ahead of the current trends in swimwear. Where do you find your inspiration for designing new swimwear styles?

I find inspiration in everything specially living in NYC! Many times I dream of a bathing suit and when I wake up, I try to draw it. Our concept is doing bathing suits in a fashionable way, like clothing. So fashion magazines are a great source. When I see a dress or even a sweater or any piece that catches my eye, I try to see in what way I could do something similar in a bathing suit.

From exploring the beaches of South America I have found that a swimsuit is about more than being practical, it’s fashion. One thing that I noticed is that South Americans love to accessorize on the beach. What accessories would you suggest adding to your summer beach attire to enhance the overall outfit without overdoing it?

Yes, in some beaches of South America everything is about fashion and the swimsuit is the protagonist. I love when our clients can’t wait to show their new bikinis to friends or walk in the beach making people turn around to see them. Accessories are a must. I love wearing them when going to the beach. I suggest wearing a very light scarf or pareo that you can also wear it over the head or a cool hat. Wearing loose pieces, harem pants, tunics with belts. Always casual rather than fancy. However, my rule number one is that most of the pieces I wear don’t have to match the bikini. I hate when everything matches!

Many women don’t know which type of bikini would fit their body type. As the designer, I’d love to find out which body types would best fit in your suits.

It’s often hard for woman to find a swimsuit that they love in an actual store. It’s seems it would be impossible for a woman to find a suit online that they will and love and fit well. What tips can you give for women who want to purchase swimwear online?

Finding the right bathing suits is not an easy task. The big advantage of buying online is that you can try them in the comfort of your house and without the pressure of sales personnel and weird lighting in the fitting rooms! Nina makes very easy to return the suits if the client is not happy. To buy online the most important thing is to know your body and take your body measurement of the following: breast, back and hips. Once you know your measurements go to the reference table and choose your size. The most important thing when you are looking for the ideal bathing suit is to feel comfortable and feel sexy.

In the USA, women are shyer about wearing less coverage on the bottom. Explain how the right fit of the bottom (i.e. Brazilian, Argentine, American, full coverage etc..) can enhance or detract from a woman’s figure.

Most of American women are not comfortable with smaller bottom and they think that more fabric will be more flattering. And actually that might be the opposite. If you cover your whole behind, the butt will look bigger. For a lift and more flattering look the best is a “V” shape. One piece suit are very elegant and can be as sexy as a two piece, but if you have wide hips, then avoid low rise bottoms.

Do you have any tips on choosing colors that are more flattering for skin tones?

The color of your skin is very important, if you are fair skin go for stronger colors. If you are thinking of tanning then any print with white background will look very flattering.

What suit styles, colors etc… should I be packing for my 2009 summer vacation?

You should be packing some pieces with tribal prints and earth colors (browns, green, orange, etc). Also strong colors (yellow, green, silver). Maybe a cutout bikini or a one piece and all the rest should be two pieces.

What are the most common mistakes that women make when purchasing a swimsuit/bikini?

Women think that if the bathing suit is bigger and has more fabric then they will look smaller and usually is the opposite you just need to have the right fabric and cover the right place.

Jet Set Body: Food Control

By Kim · February 24, 2009 · Filed in Looking Your Best · 4 Comments »

Part of having a Jet Set Life is having a Jet Set Body. And no, I’m not just talking about how you look in that swimsuit (although I do think feeling great about how you look, instead of feeling insecure is important). Think about it, how could you have a real Jet Set Life is you feel tired, over weight, sluggish and unhappy with your physique? If you want to have enough energy to no only take on the world but to really enjoy it, you’ll have to be healthy. Plus, who doesn’t want to look slammin’ when they de-robe to hit the hottest pool scene?

Unfortunately, when people obsess over making the millions, they tend to let their health and body go. They put this priority on the back burner. It’s easy to skip the workout or grab fast food when you have to choose between health and money. And as we all know, fast food is often a culprit of weight gain.

Have you not watched Super Size Me yet?

Okay, let’s assume you want to change your lifestyle, and as a result improve you health and your overall appearance. Weight loss is all about calories in (eating) vs. calories out (expended). Weight-loss and improving your health is about choosing the right foods, and eating them in the right portions. The number of calories you’re supposed to take in each day ranges from 1200-2000 depending on your height, weight and goals. It’s best to spread those calories into 4-6 smaller meals/snacks each day to help regulate blood sugar and keep you from overeating.

GET HONEST

Everyone starts with the sentence “I don’t eat that bad…”. But most people (including Rob and I) have no clue how many calories are in the foods we eat. The best way to determine just how many calories, grams of fat that you’re putting in your pie-hole is to do one thing: KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL

THE FOOD JOURNAL MADE EASY:

Technology has made nutritional tracking simple. If you have an iPhone you can down load an application called Lose It! or you can just sign onto your iGoogle and download one of ten calorie counters. Personally, I use the Food & Calorie Finder. I like it because it’s easy to use, stores previous meals and even has name brand foods like the Kashi Go Lean bars that I love! You’ll be shocked at how many calories you consume in a given day. My suggestion is to keep a 3-day record of your calories before you begin any changes. See what you really are eating. I know for me, I was eating a salad from Moe’s that turned out to be 500 calories!

A COMMON PROBLEM:

The most common problem you’ll encounter while tracking your food is not entering the right portion sizes. Not all bagels are created equal! A lenders bagel is 4 inches, where as, the average bagel is 5-6 inches! A normal serving of chicken is 3-4 ounces, but the average chicken breast is really to 7-8 ounces. Watch closely and measure your portions until you get better at “eye balling” it.

EATING OUT:

Now that you are going to track what you eat, we need to be realistic and know that you are going to eat out. It’s not as easy to figure out what restaurants use for cooking and we all know the portion sizes are insane. Now most restaurants offer “healthy options” and even whole sections of the menu are dedicated to “lighter fare”. Unfortunately, these terms are vague, so these menus and items can be extremely calorie dense. I thought I’d put together a couple examples of these so-called healthy options. These will blow your mind!

Example #1: Moe’s Southwest Grill

With a Moe’s salad called “Personal Trainer”…you’d think you’re safe right? NOPE! Even without the shell it’s high calorie!

With the shell:                                                           Without the Shell:

Personal Trainer Personal Trainer Salad

Example #2: Chili’s Restaurant

Chili’s Guiltless Menu is anything but guiltless! If this is the “diet menu” what’s the real menu like? If I 750 calories at lunch, what do I eat the rest of the day, air?

Chili's Guiltless Menu

Example #3: PF Chang’s

Chinese anyone? A complete meal at P.F. Changs… it’s almost a whole days worth of calories, without even adding dessert which can add between 800-1,500 calories alone!

* Look closely at the serving sizes, FYI these items don’t include the “side of rice” or sauces you may add

PF Changs

Example #4: Jersey Mike’s Submarine Sandwiches

Now, how about a nice turkey sub from Jersey Mike’s. The regular (6″ Turkey on wheat) is 500 calories without the oil or mayo! Hungry? Want a giant size? It’s gonna double to 1,000 calories! OMG!

Jersey Mike's

Example #5: Starbuck’s

Drinking calories is a common mistake. We think that just because it comes in a glass there are no calories being consumed. Sure these drinks may not be outrageous on the calorie count, but the grams of sugar is what’s gonna get you!

Grande Vanilla Latte                                                Skinny Vanilla Latte

Starbucks Starbucks 1

EXERCISE:

Following a consistant exercise program is key to your health and fitness. Exercise is what makes your muslces stronger(including your heart, yes, it’s a muscle too!), leaner and more shapely. You should follow a well balanced exercise program that includes resistance exercises (weight training/body weight exercises), cardiovascular exercise (aerobics, eliptical machine, running, swimming) and some form of stretching (yoga, pilates). Without all three forms of exercise your body will be unbalanced and prone to injury. As many of you know, Rob and I are avid P90X lovers. We love it because it’s designed to take people that are already in shape to the next level. But, if that doesn’t sound like you, there is also a P90 version for those new to working out consistently.

THE WRAP UP:

What ever your reason, it’s time to get in shape and bring your health and your body to the next level. It’s time to take the thought of exercise off the back burner and get out (and into) those skinny jeans again! Eat less, exercise more and obtain your Jet Set Body!

5 Tips to be Bikini Ready in 90 Days

By Kim · October 13, 2008 · Filed in Beach Travel, How You Do It, Looking Your Best · 3 Comments »

Punta del Este Jose Ignacio beach Uruguay

Picture Above: Bikini Beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay

Bikini season? Again! She must be crazy! Nope, in the Southern Hemisphere, summer is on it’s way and it’s coming whether you are ready or not! So, if you’re heading South to an exotic destination like Buzios, Punta del Este or Sydney (or want to just look like you are), here are my tips on getting a bikini-ready-bod in 90 days or less.

1. Let’s Get That Butt “High & Tight”

If you live above the equator then that probably means your 2008 bikini body is getting ready for plush sweaters, warm Winter coats and maybe a couple of extra pounds to keep you warm at night (or maybe that’s just what you tell yourself as you eat your way through the holidays). My suggestion is to find a workout that keeps kicking (and lifting) your butt year round. For me, it’s P90X. This home workout is tough and not meant for the beginning exerciser. You’ll need a chin up bar, free weights or bands and a lot of dedication. Three days per week you’ll focus on different body parts such as “Chest & Back” or “Arms & Shoulders” plus “Ab Ripper X”. The other three days you’ll do either “Kenpo X” (think cardio-kickbox), “Yoga X” (1.5 hours of ass-kicking yoga) or “Plyo X” (various jumping exercises for one-hour straight). Every three weeks it’s a different phase, total muscle confusion. Between each phase you do one week of “Core”, “Yoga” and “Stretch X”. The program has many variations such as classic, fat burning and even a double-day workout program for the psychos. It’s enough to keep you interested, not to mention it keeps your heart rate up and your body fat down. Stop making excuses.

2. Finding the Perfect Fit + Personal Style = Bikini Nightmares

It’s almost impossible to find bikinis that fit your shape and personal taste. Add to that the desire to wear a swimsuit that isn’t on every other girl at the pool and you’ve got one complex situation! I’ve complied a list of my favorite swimsuit designers and shops worldwide. You’ll be sure to find great fits and unique styles. Just double check the return policies!

3. Getting Hair-Free

There’s nothing worse that having to shave your legs (or anywhere else) while on holiday. You have temporary options like Bikini Waxing, or you have permanent options like Laser Hair Removal. You need to plan ahead for both so make a decision and throw away that razor.

4. Smooth Sun Kissed Skin (minus the sun)

No one wants wrinkles, but we all want the golden tan. Sunless is the way to go. Keeping the skin smooth and silky is a must for sunless tanning. I’ve complied a list of my favorite exfoliates and tanners to help you achieve a non-blotchy perfect summer tan.

Exfoliate:
Philosophy Coconut Frosting Salt Scrub
$25 for 23 oz.

Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads
$36 for 8 oz.

Korres Basil Lemon Body Scrub
$17 for 5 oz.

Sunless Tanners

Fantasy Tan Airbrushing

At Home:

Clarins Radiance-Plus Self Tanning
$51 for 1.7 fl/oz.

Too Faced: Tanning Bed in a Tube
$22.50 for 6 fl/oz.

5. Moisturize & Protect

Taking care of your skin is especially important during and after a day in the sun. You want to make sure your skin stays protected from the sun’s harmful rays, as well as the chemicals in pools or the drying salt in the ocean. Here’s a list of my favorite moisturizers and sunscreens.

Moisture:
La Mer Body Creme
$130-$190 for 6.7-10 fl/oz.

Fresh Sugar Lemon Body Lotion
$28 for 10 fl/oz.

Bliss Body Butter
$35 for 8.5 fl/oz.

Sunscreen for the Face:

Natura Bisse Oil Free SPF 30
$95

Shiseido Ultimate Sun for Face

I’m going to be doing a few blogs this weekend so I’m keeping this one short. Shopping for the summer is my favorite! I’ve got some great stores that always have something perfect for that dip in the pool, lazy lounge day or dancing till dawn on the beaches of the Mediterranean.

Here’s my favs and why for the ladies:

(if you want to see the men’s list, be sure to check my husband, Rob’s new blog)

Blue Genes: They are the #1 boutique for Men, Women and Children’s fashion in Atlanta. But now with their website you can order online. If the prices are too high, check out their new outlet. Great denim selection. These three sisters got it right!

Blue Genes Sister

Lisa Kline Women: This LA boutique may cater to the stars in Hollywood, but that’s not why I love this place. They always have the softest tee’s and the coolest little dresses. You can shop online or call and chat with an associate on the phone. They ship fast and you’ll love everything!

Lisa Kline in LA

Planet Blue: This Malibu Colony shop by far is my FAVORITE. I LOVE this place. They have the best variety and a very laid back atmosphere.

Planet Blue Malibu

Express: Yep, good old Express. Every season they have something I can’t live without. This year is their Solid Featherweight tees. at $16.50, I have one in every color of the rainbow. I’m a sucker for soft cotton!

Express Store

Intuition: This tiny little store has so much to offer. They definitely have some of the coolest accessories.

Shop Intuition LA

Bella Beachwear: Authentic Brazillian style bikinis. None of the American Brazilian stuff! If you got the booty, they got the suit for you!

Bella Beachwear Bikini

Ella Brazil: High-end Brazilian swim wear. Sexy and unique styles that ensure you won’t be wearing the same suit as anyone else!

Ella Brazil Bikinis

H&M: Great place to shop for trendy boutique styles and Target prices! Great place to get those pieces you know will probably only make it through one season if you’re lucky!

OSA: If you can’t wait to buy your summer shades in Europe, then you need to buy them here. They have the best selection of sunglasses anywhere!

Optical Shop of Aspen South Beach

I got veneers & next thing I know, I’m hanging with Cindy Crawford!

Having a great smile is so important. A great smile can lighten the mood, make people feel open and welcomed by you, it eases tension, I’d even argue that it can help you not only in your personal life, but also in your business dealings. Almost everyone does something during their lifetime to improve their smile. Actually, I’d bet that people do lots of things during their life to improve their smile: braces, whitening trays, whitening strips, Invisalign and even veneers!

For me, I’ve done almost all of them. Including the good old home remedy of brushing with baking soda & peroxide. The braces made them straighter, but as soon as I stopped wearing the retainer they became misaligned again. And I could change the color, but I never could change the actual shape of my teeth. In pictures, they looked okay as long as it wasn’t a close up. The video that broke the camels back was our Punta del Este video. I have a very close up scene and when we were previewing the video on our 50″ plasma, all I could see what how awful my teeth looked. I wanted to crawl into a hole, and die. Here are the problems I had with my teeth.

#1: The Snaggle ~ I hated this tooth! It was always glaringly obvious to me in pictures. It haunted me.

#2: The Yellow Bonded Tooth ~ This is the Snaggle’s sister tooth. Apparently some dentist decided to bond it and it turn a lovely shade of summer yellow. Great for dandelions, bad for teeth.

Before Veneers

Okay, so my teeth weren’t the worse case in history. But they made me feel uncomfortable. Especially when we’re traveling around the world and doing our travel show. My husband has veneers, and smiling next to his pearly white chompers was always intimidating! So, we decided to get me matching veneers. Here’s my story.

First, let me say that the choosing the cosmetic dentist is the most important choice you will ever make. It’s right up there with deciding who you’ll marry and whether or not you want to have children. The dentist can give you a beautiful smile or you could end up with a mouth full of Chicklet-looking teeth. The way you choose a dentist is easy, look at his/her work. Not pictures, but find actual real live people who have had work done by the dentist and check out their teeth, ask questions, get all your answers. If you don’t know anyone who’s had them done, ask the dentist for references. Or you can just go to my guy, he’s awesome!

Dr. Robert Joiner did my husband’s veneers as well as my veneers. He’s definitely one of the best dentists in the South East. He will give you his honest opinion on what will look best for your teeth. What you want is a perfectionist, and he is one. He won’t let you walk out of that office until your teeth are perfect! I know I’m really talking him up here, but it’s the truth. I’d send anyone to him without any worries. Here’s the process of how he made my teeth go from problem to perfect in less than one month!

Day 1: Consultation, X-rays, Preliminary Impression

Dr. Joiner looked at my original God given chompers. He checked out my x-rays and decided how many teeth showed in my smile (the top 8). He made a model of my teeth and sent it to the lab to see what the they thought could work. His estimation, 6 Lumineers and 2 crowns (Yellow & Snaggle of course, the problem children). Lumineers are super thin layers of porcelain that just slip right over the natural teeth and are cemented in place.

Before Veneers

Day 2: Teeth Shaping, Veneer Impressions, Temporary Crowns/Veneers

Dr. Joiner was correct. I needed 6 Lumineers and 2 crowns. So, this visit was to do the work for the crowns and shape the teeth so the Lumineers could be placed over the teeth. It was a long visit, and I’m a baby with a needle. But, Dr. Joiner has a magic thing he does to make the needle not hurt. We also chose the color on this visit. Once the Snaggle and Yellow were gone, my teeth were pretty white. We decided to go with 1M1 for color. Which apparently is very white. Here’s what my teeth looked like after the shaping and with the temporary crowns. When I left the office, I felt like my teeth looked 100% better, even without the Lumineers. I couldn’t even imagine what the finished product would be like!

Teeth Shaped before Veneers

Day 3: Final Veneers

V-Day as I like to call it. This day changed my smile and pretty much my life forever! This is the final appointment. I saw the veneers in the tray. They were so tiny, literally like a contact lens! He numbed me up with his magic needle and got to work perfecting my smile! Once the veneers are cemented on, Dr. Joiner shaped them, adjusted the length of the teeth and basically became a dental artist. I think he had a vision of what he wanted them to look like, and he wasn’t stopping until they looked just right. I can’t even explain how happy I am with the finished product. Here it is:

After Lumineers

Here are some after photos:

Here’s two great examples of Dr. Joiner’s work!

Veneers

Now for the Cindy Crawford part of the story. The day after I got the veneers, I was in Randy Gerber’s lounge, Whiskey Park at the W-Hotel in Atlanta. In walks Cindy Crawford, she’s so damn tall, so damn beautiful and so sweet! Here’s a photo from the night. The beautiful blond in the photo is my friend Lori. (Ya, know you think you’re pretty right up until you’re in a photo with Cindy Crawford.)

Well, that’s it. If you have any questions about veneers, Lumineers, Dr. Joiner or Cindy Crawford, feel free to email me. But, for real, if you’re thinking about veneers, you need to check out Dr. Joiner and let him work his magic on your mouth.

See you all next Friday!
