There are even better deals if you can go for monthly rentals. We only pay around 600 dollars a month for luxury village houses in a gorgeous 15th century village in Andalucia, Spain with spectacular ocean views! These same places go for a fortune by the week during the sweltering summer high season when sun starved Brits go on “holiday”. It is crazy, because the crowds are gone and the weather is perfect in the winter!

Kim, I completely agree that renting an apartment/condo is the way to go if you’re staying put for a week or more. Some of the best deals I’ve found over the years are:
A condo on the water in Boothbay Habor, Maine – $500 for the week
A condo 3 blocks off Duval Street with a waterfront view and pool access in Key West – $1000
A 2 bedroom villa with jacuzzi in the Columbier area of St. Barts – $1500 including car rental (low season)

Besides the increased privacy and cost savings, I really like how villas give you the opportunity to shop and cook like a local. Grocery stores are a great way to learn about a place very quickly. You see all types of people and get a lot of insight into to the food and culture.
