I was standing in line at my local American Express Travel office waiting to exchange my US dollars for that damn Euro. As if I’m not already mad enough because I know that as soon as I had over my little green friends, I’m loosing money. “Ugh, this sucks” I say to the American Express rep as she tells me the exchange rate. Then out of no where this random guy next to me says, “Think it sucks now, just wait until you’re exchanging the Amero!”. “The Amero? What the heck is an Amero?” I asked. He preceded to ramble about the U.S., Canada and Mexico all joining forces to become the North American Union, obviously modeling it after the European Union. I thought either he’s the smartest guy in the world, or a crazy lunatic. So, I did some research and found that currently the Amero is a conspiracy theory with some possible truths.
The opinions on the Amero are so widespread and the topic itself is very controversial. Some believe that if the three nations were to adopt the Amero, it would be able to eliminate the threat of other regional currencies (the Euro, and possible Asian and/or African currencies) and provide stability of the local currency. Also, it’s believed that our dollar would strengthen against the other currencies in the world. Some claim that the U.S., Canada and Mexico would then adopt a similar open border policy as they do in the EU. However, others believe that the Mexican peso will “drag down” the U.S. and Canadian dollars and the Amero would be in a worse position than the the current U.S. Dollar is in right now. And with the U.S. currently building a “wall” between the US and Mexico, it seems that the borders will not have that open border policy.
Hmmmm….So many theories, so little time. What are your thoughts?

This is a very interesting topic and I’m glad you brought it up! I’ve never heard of the Amero, but if the Euro is doing well then maybe that’s something to model? Thanks for the post, Kim!
As with all conspiracy theories, there’s enough here to make you think, as you point out above.
Canada
As Canadians are wont to point out, a North American Union would essentially allow the US access to Canada’s natural resources without the kinds of compensation they enjoy today. They’re not really going to want us drilling in their territory anytime soon. Say what you want about the Canucks, but they are fiercely patriotic and this would not sit well with them.
Mexico
Mexico would arguably benefit the most. Their currency would drag the other two down somewhat, but it would likely raise their currency overall in the long term. As for the wall we’re building to keep them out – well, there’s two problems with that. The first is that the wall is 700 miles long (whereas the border is 2200 miles long), and is broken into sections, so there are HUGE gaps, and that’s where the people will cross. The second is that most illegal immigrants come here legitimately and just over-stay their welcome.
The United States
The US could benefit – we already have NAFTA which many argue is the precursor to this anyway. There is talk of a “super-highway” between the US, Mexico, and Canada, and this would be one more thing that would allow us to extend our trade, and bolsters the Amero theory as well. However, most people in this country don’t like the idea of letting others in as it is (unfortunately), so the idea of an open-border policy is anathema to most Americans already. We would gain very little from going to Mexico and/or Canada freely that isn’t pharmaceutical-related (or exploitative, as above), and we all know how Big Pharma feels about that now.
Overall, I don’t see this happening in the near term at all, and the long outlook is very doubtful as well.
Incidentally… I notice that the “Amero” symbol, the “A” inside a circle, looks an awful lot like the Anarchist symbol (which is an “A” inside a circle).
There’s definitely much to find out about the subject. Chinese state media, Sarkozy, and Ron Paul have all said that the US is PURPOSEFULLY destroying the dollar in order to take control of the global economy and introduce the Amero.

“When the government can no longer pass the United States’ “immense debt” on to taxpayers, it will turn to the holders of U.S. dollars, leading to the eventual downfall of the currency, Hennecke said.”

I think all fiat currency is in trouble and the dollar will continue to fall. We went with the people who saw it coming and mostly got out of the dollar in 2005. It makes Europe so much nicer, when you don’t have to use dollars! The only time we have to use dollars is when we use our credit cards and we avoid that like the plague. When major banks are folding around the world and more are waiting in the wings….when the stockmarket continues to go down despite the wall street crooks pork belly ridiculous bail out….you know the pain has not even begun yet.
