Punta del Este - Uruguay
Models, Celebrities and the South American Elite come together for just a few weeks per year and party!
Punta del Este, Uruguay is like the sweet creamy center between the two cookies of Brazil and Argentina! When people reference Punta del Este, they are talking about the actual town of that name and it’s surroundings towns. In total Punta has over 30 miles of coastline. The main town of Punta del Este is where you’ll find the port and most of the major hotels like the Conrad Hotel & Casino and also the most tourists. In fact, McDonald’s is only a block away. What we recommend is to stop and take your photos of La Mano (the hand coming out of the sand) and then keep driving until you hit La Barra. Stop and also take a photo of the famous roller-coaster bridge (which the locals refer to it as the Sophia Lauren bridge because of it’s curves).
Then take a deep breath because you are now in La Barra. La Barra is like Laguna Beach, California but with a Latin twist. There’s an unique and intimate feel. The people are a sexy blend of rich elite and surfing hostel; think Blue Crush meets Life Styles of the Rich and Famous. The only catch is that everyone is beautiful and friendly, regardless of financial class! The streets of La Barra are lined with B & B’s, unique shops, great cafes, delicious restaurants and rocking bars. This town is the center of all excitement in Punta del Este. We prefer staying in this area and being close to the action. However, we feel The Mantra Hotel takes away from the real La Barra experience. It’s too “grand” and it makes you feel like you are in vegas and not in South America.
We definitely suggest a small boutique hotel or posada. At night, the streets of La Barra are crowded until the wee hours of the morning with teenagers partying on the side of the road, young adults heading to the discotheque and the more seasoned adults sipping wine at one of the many local restaurants or cafes.
Past La Barra you’ll see so many beautiful beach houses and miles of vacant sandy dunes. After about 20 minutes you’ll arrive in world famous Jose Ignacio. This is the place to see and be seen, especially during the day. Have lunch at La Huella and enjoy some of the finest people watching worldwide!
