Yesterday we hit Perivolas’s black sand beach in Santorini. There right before my ouzo soaked eyes, I see chicks in red and white Marlboro outfits cruising the beach looking for prey. In the states, we had the Marlboro man doing the dirty work keeping us hooked. In Europe, they have chicks in sexy outfits on the beach. I suppose there’s no better way to keep a European smoking than to wrap a cigarette up in a pretty girl and put her on the beaches of the Greek Isles.

I Wanted to get this mini retirement post out from Mykonos today:

Super paradise beach on the Greek Island of Mykonos is a great place to let the inner dark side in you come out. It’s kind of a cross between heaven and hell (maybe even purgatory). If you take your partying seriously this is absolutely the place for you. If you get offended by chicks dancing on stripper poles built into a boat grounded on the beach this ain’t your place.

Super Paradise Beach (not to be confused with plain old paradise beach) is a place that I defy you to go to and not say it was the craziest scene you’ve ever been part of on a beach. It’s debauchery at it’s finest. Read their own description on their website here.

Here’s how it goes down. You take your scooter (or car) and get there around 5pm. In about one hour the place will be filled with people wanting to party. You’ll see straight, gay, nude, semi nude and some other things I just cant show you here. The mega yachts pull up and the billionaires mix with the not so billionaires all in the name of living an amazing life and letting it all go. In Europe they just “get” this party thing. There’s a time for work and there’s a time for NOT work. So I say why not let your dark side out? Come on you know you want it…..

Right now, at this very moment, someone somewhere is getting sprayed by champagne. I say – why not you? Why take a perfectly good bottle of Champagne and spray it you might ask. I say why NOT! It’s kind of one of those things that clearly illustrates the difference between efficient and effective. Not exactly the most efficient use of a bottle of champagne but a very effective way of having a blast!

While Kim and I were filming our Marbella Jet Set Life Show we met these guys from Kuwait and told them it was our wedding anniversary.  Next thing we know 5 bottles of champagne show up and we’re covered! Here’s a short video….

Jet Set Partying Lesson One: Pace Your Self

Summer time in the Med can be a blast. Cool people, great parties, lots of sunshine and lots of cocktails. Did I say lots of cocktails? Kim and I met some really cool people (from London) at Nikki Beach in Marbella. They invited us out to the hottest night club in the Costa del Sol, Olivia Valere.

We decided to go to dinner first at an Italian Restaurant in the port. I ordered cocktails. They didn’t. How could these obvious Jet Setters not be drinking I thought. “We’re pacing our selves” they said. Had I heeded their warning I would not have looked like what your about to see in this video. I’ll just let the video tell the story…..

On a recent trip to Marrakech. I had a connection in Paris with a change of airports from Charles de Gaulle to Orly. Turns out there was a transit strike in Paris which created massive traffic so my luggage couldn’t be transported to meet my connection. Bottom line: It took 5 days for me to eventually receive my luggage. I had NO clothes (except what I had on). I spent five days wearing this….

Sexy isn’t it? I swore to the Jet Set Gods above (you know David Beckham, Giselle Bundchen, Naomi Campbell) that I would never check another bag again- unless I was moving furniture. So, how was I going to pull this off?

I decided to go to the oracle. I consulted with my man Tim Ferriss. He wrote an excellent post about it. I got a lot of great ideas from him but… it was a little too back packer for my taste. So, I modified it a bit. I have since been asked to post my packing checklist. So here goes….

I have two checklists. One for my electronics and the other for clothing.

My equipment:

1. A Tumi Ducati Carry On (for clothing and personal products).

2. A Tumi Duffel Carry On Bag (for electronics).

BTW: Kim recently wrote a great post on: Why I will never cheat on my Tumi.

Checklist 1: Electronics

*All my gadgets fit comfortably in this bag and are easily removed in flight.

1. Nikon DSLR camera (This is a great higher end digital camera that allows a lot of photography options).

2. Panasonic HD Video camera (This is a fantastic inexpensive HD camera that works perfectly with Apple).

3. Sony Cyber Shot digital camera (You can easily stick it in your pocket when you go out at night).

4. iPhone 16 gig (I never turn it on when traveling abroad-I use Skype- I just cant seem to leave it home).

5. Skype Phone (Fantastic wired phone with a USB plug that allows me to make Skype calls on a handheld).

6. Amazon Kindle (Holds 400 books in the size of one paperback-looks and feels like an actual book).

7. Apple Lap Top (I use the black macbook- has stood up well all around the world.)

8. Ipod Classic (160 gig- holds more movies, tv shows, and music for the plane that I would ever need).

9. Skull Candy Headphones (Affordable great noise canceling headphones. I like them better than my Bose).

10. Extra Lap top Batteries (2 laptop batteries pre-charged for movies on a long flight).

11. Telephoto Lens for Nikon (I carry two lenses one for portraits and the other for distance).

12. Polarizing filter (Makes the sky bluer and and the clouds whiter.)

13. Dual Headset Connector (A little adapter that allows Kim and I to share a headphone jack).

14. Laptop to Ipod Connector (Allows me to connect my ipod to my laptop to watch movies on the plane).

15. Quarters- (I bring a few quarters to pull the back cover off my macbook to replace the battery).

Checklist 2: Clothing

*Note: The goal here is to have beach, daytime and nightlife outfits that could be rotated and intermixed with each other. I’m also willing to launder on a trip if it’s longer than 7 days. Use this list as more of a template to plug your own outfits into. The point here is to pre-select your outfits so you don’t bring the kitchen sink with you.

For those who have been asking…. P90X continues to kick my butt and I’m loving it!

I looked around the pool and saw some pretty incredible examples of great bodies. It got me thinking…What is the 20% that these people do that allows me to see veins in their abdomens? I’m a big believer in modeling the success of others (probably from my Tony Robbins upbringing). So I began the search for my lost abdominal veins.

At about 2 a.m. (and after a long night of shooting our first domestic show for Jet Set Life) we turn on the TV in our hotel room.  A commercial for the P90X workout comes on. I would have NEVER watched it but I was held captive without my Tivo remote control to fast forward through it. After about 10 minutes I was completely hooked. It just felt real to me. You know how you know when something is real and something is B.S.? This just felt real.

The next morning I sort of sheepishly said to my wife Kim “What did you think of that infomercial for P90X we watched last night”? She said “It looks amazing”. You don’t know what kind of rave review that is from Kim. She has her degree in exercise physiology, has won many fitness competitions and has done years of personal training. I’ve been working out for most of my adult life, run marathons and hold exactly zero faith in infomercials. Did we fall prey to the marketing gods? We couldn’t still be tipsy from the previous night….could we?

We decided to order it. Just three payments of $39.95. What the heck. Right? We logged on to the P90X website and took the plunge. To be accurate the 3 payments of $39.95 doubled by the time the checkout happened because of a few additional items that we needed (chin up bar, bands and recovery drink). You really can’t do the program without the chin up bar or the bands.

A week later the box shows up. 12 DVD’s, a chin up bar, bands, recovery drink and a nutritional book. The program is based on the concept of “muscle confusion”. Simply put, your body never has time to adapt to anything because everyday (6 days a week) your doing something different. You do back & chest, legs, arms etc., but you also do plyometrics, yoga, boxing, stretch, cardio, ab ripper, core synergistic to name a few.

My workouts in the past have consisted of standard gym rat stuff. Back and Bi’s, shoulders and tri’s, legs and arms etc. I’ve been doing this for 20 years! Not only am I bored out of my mind with it but there are way more effective ways to achieve better results. Doing the same gym rat workout didn’t exactly help Arnold much after 30 years.

We popped in the first DVD thinking it would be a different kind of workout but not for a minute did we think we wouldn’t be able to get through it. Yes, dear readers we could NOT get through it. We had to stop it at least 5 times. No joke. Who is this guy on the DVD (Tony Horton), what planet did he come from and why at 45 is he wiping the street with me?

We are only a few weeks into this insane work out so I dont have hard data to give you yet. I will tell you that my body is definitely beginning to change, I absolutely love (and completely fear) the workouts, and will absolutely give it the 90 days it asks for (thats where the 90 in the P90 X comes from, the X comes from X-treme).

I’ll update you on my 30 day results from Greece in a few weeks.

Most people are so excited to take their next trip, that they often overlook critical areas in their pre-planning process (if they even have one at all). To a large extent, my trips are a big part of my overall lifestyle design. The result I’m after when I’m traveling is to create sexy, effortless, living while I’m abroad. That’s very different than simply “taking a vacation” and having an outcome of say, “getting away”.

From time to time I get accused of wanting to be part of the see and be seen crowd for random gratuitous reasons. That simply just isn’t true. What I want is to be around a group of people that value experiencing life and international cultures in a big sexy way. As for my accusers…. Your boring and…

That said, here’s a few tips I use when selecting a hotel using Tim Ferriss’ 80/20 rule:

The Hotel

Selecting the hotel is probably the biggest area I put my attention on first (other than selecting the destination). If you do this right you’ll be in a hip hotel, enjoying great service and a perfect location which equals an amazing trip. If it’s done wrong you will probably be stuck in a tragically bad hotel and you’ll be spending time at the pool with a nice family from Nebraska (no dis to Nebraska- I love corn).

Ian Schrager, who by all accounts is regarded as the master of the boutique hotel, calls this concept “hotel as theatre”. His brand of hotel is so widely received that the Morgans hotel group bought his company for a reported 300 million and the Marriott hotel chain has just hired him to do 100 of their new hotels (probably to compete with the W ). The trick however is finding the right hotel that can pull off the experience without it feeling contrived.

Here’s a few of my picks for helping in this process:

1. Tablet Hotels

2. Mr and Mrs Smith

3. Hip Hotels

After I narrow down the list of hotels that I’m interested in, I go to Trip Advisor for the reviews on them. If you hear things like “there were topless girls at the pool all weekend- stay away! ” take it with a grain of salt.

The Concierge

When I’m satisfied with my hotel choice, I call the hotel and ask to speak with the concierge and say the following:

” I’m coming to your hotel on X day and my name is X. Here’s what I’m looking for. I need 5 restaurants, 5 lounges, and 5 clubs that fall into the following category: hip, chic, trendy, high fashion jet set type places. Please NO typical tourist destinations. Would you kindly e-mail them to me along with the website links for each so that I can check them all out and I’ll get back to you with reservation times. Thank you”. (Realize most concierges get kick-backs for sending you to certain places).

Virtual Tourist

After I check out the links, I’ll then take the list and go to virtual tourist and read the reviews on the restaurants or simply type into google “reviews of (name of restaurant)” and evaluate each.

This definitely takes some time and is probably a bit anal but I rarely have a crappy trip with this system.
