<img class="alignnone size-full" src="http://www.jetsetlife.tv/robsblog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/20110706-013658.jpg" alt="20110706 013658 Finding My Abs.
Where the hell are my Abs? It seems like I JUST saw them not that long ago. Did somebody steal them? Have I been the victim of some sensless crime? Ok, this isn’t funny. Not only did someone steal my abs, but whoever took them, replaced them with a belly that jiggles everytime I take a step!

Ahhh…if explaining the loss of one’s abs were as easy as pointing the finger at someone else. What really happened to that diced up six pack that I had at 16? Is it gone forever? I went on a search, (no, a mission) to find out. I’m just vein (and annoying) enough to not stop until I find out the answers.

Here’s the strange part. I never really let my self go. I worked out all the time. It was almost like my workouts were failing me. I wasn’t a contestant for the biggest looser or anything. It’s just that I looked kind of soft and mushy. It seemed like all the weightlifting I was doing was making me more muscle-y, and soft and mushy. And, all the cardio I was doing didn’t seem to be helping either. Here’s a pic:

What gives? It’s GOT to be my diet. Right? So, I cut WAY back on what I was eating. I made a HUGE drop in the calories I was taking in and….nothing! No change. Well, maybe a little, but I certainly didn’t see a 6-pack.

This was starting to get REALLY irritating! I had only two choices here. Give up or figure it out. I decided to figure it out. The answers didn’t come fast. There is a lot of crap out there about how to get lean. Most of it is just that, crap and doesn’t work.

I wanted to try a totally different approach. I began my search for answers by stepping into the world of fitness modeling. I thought…who would know better than the people who make their living on staying shredded. I knew it was more than just going to the gym and watching what you eat, because I was already doing that and I didn’t look like anything like this:

Turns out I was right. They did have tricks and none of those tricks were even close to what I was doing. In fact, it was the total OPPOSITE of what I was doing and it was really frickin’ weird! None of it made any sense. Well, it didn’t then, but it does now.

What came out of this one year mission were lots of useful tips, tricks and strategies that I could immediately implement to achieve my goal. I learned how to eat and get lean. I learned how to train to get shredded. Most importantly…. I found those F**** abs I lost. Here’s a current pic (sorry for the whole Zoolander look:)

If you want to know exactly how I did it, I can totally hook you up. I documented every detail of what I’ve learned and we put it all together into one package. It’s called Jet Set Body and it’s frickin’ amazing!

Next week I’m turning 44. What comes with that is a pile of wisdom that I could have never have obtained without going through the fire that I have. What also comes with age is that damn spare tire that constantly rears it’s ugly muffin-top shaped head.

I was luckily enough to marry a hot chick–13 years my junior–which forced me to find new ways to stay on my game and keep my sh** right. The problem was, it got tougher and tougher to fight the bulge. I swear to you I was no slug. I worked out every day and ate healthier than my average counterpart. But, I still felt like the aging 40-something, always having to suck my gut in at the beach.

As many readers of this blog know, I decided to enter into a fitness competition to shake things up. It did exactly what I hoped it would do. It got me lean and strong. Here’s some behind the scenes video. But, I got to thinking…..What was the difference 25 pounds ago?

I worked out then. I work out now. I ate right then. I eat right now. What is the difference? Ahhh…..as Shakespeare said “let me count the ways”. The differences are so subtle that you’d completely miss them if you weren’t looking.

Subtle Differences 101:

1. My workout back then almost never changed (I even started adapting to my P90X training). Now, my workout changes every week in some small way (reps, weight, exercises etc). I literally mean every week.

2. My diet back then may have been fine, but never really changed much. I would have never even thought that changing your diet was important. Now, my diet changes from week to week. Proteins up this week. Carbs down that week. Water intake up this week. Water intake down that week. All for different reasons –which to be honest– are way beyond my understanding. Another thing, I eat WAY more food now then ever before!

3. My cardio back then was 40 minutes a day until I exploded. Now, my cardio is just a few times per week with a heart monitor that dictates when to spike my intensity. Which is all based upon what my muscle looks like. In other words, evaluating whether or not the cardio is causing me lose muscle mass. Which, I had no idea that cardio training could do.

4. The biggest change and honestly the point of this blog is adding a coach to this equation. Back then I did not have a coach. Nor did I think it was necessary to do anymore than diet, cardio and exercise. The truth is, there is NO way I would have intellectually understood these subtle differences in diet, exercise and cardio with out one. More than anything, having a weekly check in with the coach, with the pictures to prove your success or failure, definitely keeps you honest!

For those who have emailed and asked. Here’s my secret. His name is Rob Knox. He is the Men’s coach for the famed Cathy Savage Fitness Team. Rob is brilliant when it comes to training. He just knows what to do.

It’s also Cathy’s genius, that figured out how to take the world of the Internet and the world of fitness and put them together. Many of you are working hard at creating automated businesses to travel the world. Why not automate your workout like Kim and I do? We have someone who does all the thinking for us based on what they see in a photo. They tell you EXACTLY what to do from day to day and all completely over the Internet. It worked for me. It worked for Kim. It will work for you. Here’s a link to join.

Clint Eastwood taught me that when your life is comfortable, it’s time to shake it up again. Last year I was feeling like I wanted to s-t-r-e-t-c-h and do something that was way beyond what I had ever done before. So, inspired by a friend that’s an Ironman athlete, I decided to run a marathon (all 26.2 miles of it). There’s no doubt that it kicked my ass and challenged my physical endurance. But, honestly, it didn’t challenge me to step outside of my mental comfort zone (I thought it would have).

This year I have been looking for that BIG goal. The one that would not only challenge me physically, but also, get me outside of my mental comfort zone. Well, I think I found it. And, I’m friggin’ terrified (which is probably the first sign that it’s the goal I’ve been looking for).

Last year my wife, Kim, competed in a fitness competition. At the show, I saw guys that were shredded, but not like a bodybuilder, more like the statue, David. I learned that this world of figure and fitness isn’t just for the ladies. These men were competing in a fitness model category. I was blown away by the conditioning of these guys, but by Christmas is was kinda out of sight, out of mind. Then in January, Kim said to me, “Honey, my fitness coach, Cathy Savage, just started a Men’s division and I think you should check out this guy’s transformation on her website”. One look at what this guy had accomplished, I knew I wanted in.

But, (isn’t there always a but) if I wanted to have his body AND step out of my comfort zone, that meant the goal ended with me being on stage in a male fitness model competition. Holy s**t balls! Are you kidding me? Me, get up on a stage, in a bathing suit and be judged (by three judges), against 20 somethings and an entire crowd of onlookers? Then all my Tony Robbinstraining kicked in. “If you can’t …Then you MUST!”

O.k. I’m in. Let’s do it. I asked Kim what I needed to do. She said “hire the men’s (virtual) coach [from Cathy Savage Fitness], send your photos in once a week, he’ll adjust your workouts and diet [based upon what he sees in your pictures]“.

I still had some more questions about this whole thing. I needed to get inside guy’s head a little and understand what was going through his mind. We were about the same age (he’s 39 and I’m 43) so I’m sure we both had similar fears and anxieties.

I found out that his name is Tim Diehl. I asked Tim if he would let me interview him for this blog and help me out with some of my questions. He agreed (our interview is below).

Next week: I’ll be interviewing my coach, then I’ll show you some of the progress I’ve made so far. Enjoy!

1) Thanks for agreeing to do this! Let’s start with the basics. How old are you and where are you from?

West Milford NJ, 39 YRS OLD

2) Why did you decide to do a male model competition?

I have known Rob for several years and was hanging out at a bar of all places and Rob told me about getting hired by Cathy Savage to run the men’s programs. We started talking and he bet me that he could get me into shape and do a fitness model contest. I thought, yeah right, but what did I have to lose. The rest is history.

3) What was your biggest fear when you started?

Having my fat ass up for all to see!! AND JUDGE!!

4) Let’s talk about your training. How long did it take you to go from your before picture to your after picture and could you give us an idea (in a nutshell) of what that looked like for you as far as diet and exercise?

It took about 4 to 4.5 months to get into shape. I hadn’t really been working out as you can tell so we had to start a little slow. Diet was pretty varied. Lots of good natural foods and a lot more carbs then I would have thought. We worked up to 4 days of weights give or take and 3 days of cardio around 20-30 minutes. Maybe a little more towards the end, but nothing too crazy.

5) What was your biggest challenge to overcome?

Cooking at home and not getting food on the run all day.

6) Let’s talk about stage presence. Does being on stage come naturally to you or was this a struggle (and if so how did you overcome it).

You just do it and have fun. It doesn’t come naturally, but it was fun and a challenge.

7) Knowing what you know now…. if you had to boil your successful transformation down to just a few things that you did …..what would they be an why?

Lots of little things make big things. Doing something like this makes you organized. If too many things get blown off you will pay for it later.

8) What was the biggest surprise about completing this whole process that maybe you weren’t expecting?

Dreams do come true!!

9) Tell me about the moment that they called your name to go on stage (what were you thinking and feeling)?

Here goes nothing!! I had nothing to lose. I was in fanatic shape, the best shape of my life!! What’s to lose? I worked with Rob and he got me ready.

10) What advise do you wish someone gave you before you began this whole process?

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

The moment you step off the plane in Italy you’re struck by one thing almost immediately. Everyone is skinny. I mean really skinny. How can this be? Doesn’t everyone look like Tony Soprano? Nope. Not at all. Those images you’re probably making in your head are Italian-Americans not Italians in Italy. Big difference.

Why are many Italian-Americans huge and many Italians from Italy thin as a rail? It seems that when you mix the American part, with the Italian part, things get larger. Kim and I just got back from a week in Vegas. Vegas is an obvious cross section of America so these differences became glaringly obvious. In walking around the casinos we couldn’t help but notice how massive everyone has become. I was recently talking to a pilot friend of mine who said that one of the reasons the airlines had to limit the number of bags on flights was because the average weight of passengers has gone up 20 pounds! Seat belt extensions didn’t even exist a few years ago, now they have at least a dozen on every flight.

Here’s what’s so confusing to me about this. Isn’t the “let’s slow down for hours and eat pasta” an Italian thing? The Italians are the ones that have like 5 courses right? How are they pulling this off? What about their neighbors, the French? Don’t they eat cream so thick that it would choke a donkey? Do they have special DNA that repels fat? Is it all that cigarette smoking? What is it?

If you spend some time with our Mediterranean counter parts you’ll observe a few things. Their eating habits on the surface may appear to be unremarkable, but if you dig deeper you’ll notice some significant differences.

1. They fill up on salad with almost every meal.

2. The portions are 25% less of what ours are.

3. They never snack or grab something as a quick bite in the kitchen (they eat as a family at specific times).

4. They only eat what’s fresh and never processed. It’s all about family, friends and whole food. Most Americans eat food from a box rather then from the earth.

5. They use olive oil in almost everything (helps fill you up with little downside).

6. For dessert it’s almost always fruit and nuts (rarely Gelato).

7. Fast food is almost non-existent in the culture (many McDonald’s have had to close down).

8. Meal time is a sacred event. You take your time, have great conversations, stories and laughter. Meals are eaten slowly, which means, you’re not forced in to a rushed indigestion coma and have plenty of time for digestion.

Food is so fresh in Italy that often times there isn’t even a menu in restaurants. The waiter will tell you what’s fresh and in season and create something each day around that. When the courses come out it does not look like the size of Maggiano’s portions. It’s more like the size of your fist.

So what do you think?

How did you get involved in P90X and wind up being in a video working out with Tony Horton?

Everything started for me back in 2002. Being miserably out of shape, I bought the Power 90 program off of the informercial. From there, Slim in 6 was my next program. I ended up being selected as one of the success story winners from Slim in 6, and that won me a trip to Hollywood. My last night there, I met Tony during a dinner party. He had just finished running his first test group through P90X, and he told me all about the program. Tony's and my personalities just clicked, and we became fast friends. Not long after, P90X came out and I was among the first 100 Beachbody customers to go through P90X (which gave me some incredible results). From there, I attended a few of Tony's fitness camps, and our friendship continued to grow. Then, in 2007, he called and told me that Beachbody wanted to cast me in the P90X+ series......the rest was history. Continue reading →

Tony’s and my personalities just clicked, and we became fast friends. Not long after, P90X came out and I was among the first 100 beach body customers to go through P90X (which gave me some incredible results). From there, I attended a few of Tony’s fitness camps, and our friendship continued to grow. Then, in 2007, he called and told me that Beachbody wanted to cast me in the P90X+ series……the rest was history.

2. P90X is really amassing a cult following – why do you think that is?

Quite simply, because it works. With all the garbage out there being sold on infomercials, it’s refreshing to have products that actually deliver what they promise. Every program that Beachbody releases is a winner – and they all give people the results that they are looking for. What sets P90X aside from most other programs is the intensity. It’s more challenging than anything else out there – so the results are much more dramatic than anything on the market. You take an average person, provide them with a detailed diet guide and incredible workouts, and the end result is super-fit ripped people!! Who WOULDN’T want to do P90X?!

3. Is it true that the P90X series that people are buying is now 6 years old and is still selling like gang busters? What are your thoughts on that?

P90X rolled out to the public in 2004. Initially, it didn’t do very well in the test market (except for those of us who were dedicated Beachbody customers, and we KNEW it was a hit). As more and more people started doing the program and getting exceptional results – more and more people started buying it. Here we are in 2009, and P90X is the number 1 infomercial in the country. There are Pro Athletes and celebrities clamouring to get their hands on it, and now THEY are enjoying the results of Tony’s in-home boot camp. I see it continuing to grow in popularity and it makes me anxious to see some other programs that Tony will follow up with (for it). With the growing number of people who are now hooked on high-intensity workouts, I can see more programs coming to “raise the level”.

4. What was it like shooting the plus series and what is the best way to incorporate that series into the P90X routine?

It was an incredible experience shooting the X+ series with Tony Horton and Traci Morrow. Once I turned my fitness around and got REALLY fit, it was a goal of mine to be able to one day be in a video workout with Tony. To be part of something that has such a positive impact in so many lives was an absolute honor. The P90X+ series comes with a detailed program guide, so all anyone would have to do is follow the instructions. Just like the original P90X series – P90X+ delivers the “autopilot” guide to success.

5. P90X is obviously a very aggresive program – would you say that it’s primarily for people that are in good shape already and want to get into great shape?

P90X is not really intended for beginners, but Tony and “the kids” did such a great job of providing modifications, someone that is in less than peak shape CAN get through it. By the end of their 90 days, they’ll look and feel like a whole new person…..and that’s a beautiful thing.

6. What type of workout do you do when traveling (what sort of equip do you bring with you)?

When I’m traveling, I do P90X workouts. I always bring resistance bands with me, and I’ve worked out in person enough with Tony that I can come up with a strength, cardio, or flexibility workout on the fly – with no equipment at all. I’m all about thinking outside of the box, and I always reach for the next higher level (of intensity). Some of the best workouts I’ve had were at times when I was on the road (and with little or no equipment).

So, I set three rules for myself (using Tim Ferriss’s 80/20 principal as my guide) to create the Jet Set body I was after. My assumption is that if I give 100% to the rules I created, then I would obtain my desired result.

Rule #1: Do P90X 6 days a week – no matter what

Rule #2: No cheat meals during week – even when no one’s looking

Rule #3: Eat anything I wanted on Sundays – give cheat day 100% (Chocolate pancakes- whatever i want)

I decided to experiment and test my assumptions. I made an agreement with myself to grade myself on a scale or 1-10 in effort/intensity. My goal is to aim for 7 or higher.

What amounted to a total of 6 hours a week of actions has resulted (in 30 days-my first measuring point) in a 2 inch loss in my chest, abs (measured at the belly button- the bad one), and legs. And, a pants size drop from a comfortable 33 to a 31 waist.

I’ve been taking a closer look at the people who have been able to create what I’m after. Ever see this guy with his shirt ON or NOT working out? Yeah, me neither. Or, how about this- I’m touring the Bill & Coo hotel in Mykonos for our latest guidebook and I notice this guy at the pool that’s in phenomenal shape. As I’m listening to the manager of the hotel go on about the problems that Croatia has (her native country) I see out of the corner of my eye Mr Body start doing push ups at the pool. I caught it on video below. I’m like dude! On vacation WTF! In that moment it became clear to me why that guy and Mr. Body have what they have. So, how committed are you to your Jet Set body.

How much do you like looking at pictures of yourself on the beach? Yeah me too. Not that much. As I travel around the beaches of the world I see all kinds of body’s. Some great and some not so great. My wife and I just got back from a slamming pool party at the Mondrian hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I looked around the pool and saw some pretty incredible examples of great bodies. It got me thinking…What is the 20% that these people do that allows me to see veins in their abdomens? I’m a big believer in modeling the success of others (probably from my Tony Robbins upbringing). So I began the search for my lost abdominal veins.

At about 2 a.m. (and after a long night of shooting our first domestic show for Jet Set Life) we turn on the TV in our hotel room. A commercial for the P90X workout comes on. I would have NEVER watched it but I was held captive without my Tivo remote control to fast forward through it. After about 10 minutes I was completely hooked. It just felt real to me. You know how you know when something is real and something is B.S.? This just felt real.

The next morning I sort of sheepishly said to my wife Kim “What did you think of that infomercial for P90X we watched last night”? She said “It looks amazing”. You don’t know what kind of rave review that is from Kim. She has her degree in exercise physiology, has won many fitness competitions and has done years of personal training. I’ve been working out for most of my adult life, run marathons and hold exactly zero faith in infomercials. Did we fall prey to the marketing gods? We couldn’t still be tipsy from the previous night….could we?

We decided to order it. Just three payments of $39.95. What the heck. Right? We logged on to the P90X website and took the plunge. To be accurate the 3 payments of $39.95 doubled by the time the checkout happened because of a few additional items that we needed (chin up bar, bands and recovery drink). You really can’t do the program without the chin up bar or the bands.

A week later the box shows up. 12 DVD’s, a chin up bar, bands, recovery drink and a nutritional book. The program is based on the concept of “muscle confusion”. Simply put, your body never has time to adapt to anything because everyday (6 days a week) your doing something different. You do back & chest, legs, arms etc., but you also do plyometrics, yoga, boxing, stretch, cardio, ab ripper, core synergistic to name a few.

My workouts in the past have consisted of standard gym rat stuff. Back and Bi’s, shoulders and tri’s, legs and arms etc. I’ve been doing this for 20 years! Not only am I bored out of my mind with it but there are way more effective ways to achieve better results. Doing the same gym rat workout didn’t exactly help Arnold much after 30 years.

We popped in the first DVD thinking it would be a different kind of workout but not for a minute did we think we wouldn’t be able to get through it. Yes, dear readers we could NOT get through it. We had to stop it at least 5 times. No joke. Who is this guy on the DVD (Tony Horton), what planet did he come from and why at 45 is he wiping the street with me?

We are only a few weeks into this insane work out so I dont have hard data to give you yet. I will tell you that my body is definitely beginning to change, I absolutely love (and completely fear) the workouts, and will absolutely give it the 90 days it asks for (thats where the 90 in the P90 X comes from, the X comes from X-treme).

I’ll update you on my 30 day results from Greece in a few weeks.

####

If anyone is in Mykonos and wants to hang here’s where we’ll be staying (beginning July 8).

If you want to be added to our mailing list sign up on the side bar to the right of this post (it’s a low volume mailing list, no crap, really).
