How Partying With Tiesto Can Help You Take A Walk On The Wild Side

20111031-134016.jpg

Men, have you noticed that as you get older you want to go out and party till the sun comes up less and less? Girls, have you noticed that the responsibilities of work and family have crept in and you don’t get to dance as much as you would like to?

Why is it that in America clubs are for twenty year olds? And, in Europe, you find yourself fist pumping next to a 50 year old? There’s probably lots of reasons and frankly who cares. The point is we tend to get boring as we age over here in North America.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m totally guilty of it myself. But, I decided to change things up in my life. You know…try new experiences. Before we went to Mykonos this summer a friend told me that we should see Tiesto at Cavo Paradiso. I said who’s Tiesto? He said, “dude come on”. I said “really, have no clue”. He said “Google him”.

20111031-180833.jpg

So begins my journey…..

Turns out this Mr Tiesto guy has -um- 10,018,516- Facebook fans. JEZUZ! Who the hell is this guy? Turns out DJ magazine voted him the worlds best DJ. Fair enough. I’ll give em a listen. I called my favorite hotel front desk girl Eleni and asked her if she would get me some tickets to see him. She called me back and said “all the tables are sold out”. Wait a minute. Sold out? He’s not coming for two months! I don’t want to see the second coming of Elvis. I just want to see a DJ.

Ultimately my Rock Star front desk girl Eleni (read more about her here) was able to score the tickets through some other channels.

20111031-181124.jpg

Kim and I were told to get there at midnight to secure our VIP table. Tiesto would come on at around 3am. He would play until the sun rose and the first airplane lands at the nearby airport. He did and it did.

Wow. What an experience…

Trying to set this scene is next to impossible. I’ll try. Imagine 4000 people in a club which is built into a bluff and overlooks the Mediterranean. When you first arrive at Cavo Paradiso you completely think that you are inside a club with four walls.

Around 4 am you notice something strange happening to one of the walls. It begins to turn purple. After a few cocktails and being up all night you sort of don’t pay that much attention to it. Until you look again and see that that “purple wall” actually isn’t a wall and has now miraculously been transformed into the Mediterranean ocean. Holy sh*t bawlz. We’re outside!

20111031-181532.jpg

Before you can say “where’s my glow stick”, Tiesto points out to the horizon from his pulpit, indicating that something is coming. I try and rub the alcohol out of my eyes in vain to make out what’s coming. I see two headlights twinkling in the distant sky which appear to be an airplane. I thought, maybe it was Tiesto space ship coming to pick him up because the gig was over (I later found out he has a Lear Jet for that).

20111031-181831.jpg

As the twinkling headlights begin to look more like two bright round fireballs hitting their final approach on our dance floor. Tiesto musically scores the landing to classical music which makes you feel as if you and 4000 other people are landing the plane with just the crowds’ combined energy.

I can only imagine what the Captain who just piloted in this overnight flight must be thinking. 4000 people jumping, dancing, screaming and pointing at him as he lands his massive beast of metal at the airport adjacent to Cavo.

After that night I officially became Tiesto Facebook Fan #10,018,517. For me, It’s more then just being a part of good music. It’s about being willing to embrace that dark side we all have inside us. We spend so much of our lives being restrained and contained. Maybe it’s time to take a walk on the dark side. Even if it’s just to party one night until the sun comes up with 4000 of your closest friends.

Tiesto

I wanted (needed) to understand more of what was going on behind the scenes at Cavo Paradiso. So, I asked resident DJ Stathis Lazarides to explain it all. I found him to be an amazing man that is filled with an infectious level of love.

Here’s my interview with him:

Mykonos Guide To Partying: Part 3

20110504-124045.jpg

Let’s get the pink elephant out of the room. YES, Mykonos is a place you go to party and NO it is not for the faint of heart. Kim and I have done some real damage on this island. (see below photo). I know, it’s not pretty.

20110504-120529.jpg

Cavo Paradiso

Let’s start off with a place called Cavo Pardiso. Imagine an outdoor club that’s built on a bluff which overlooks the Mediterranean sea. That doesn’t actually get going until 4 am, peaks at sunrise and when the first plane takes off (at the airport next door), triggers everyone to jump in the pool clothes on or off to celebrate. All the while, the hottest DJ’s on the planet are shooting bass through your chest like an internal vibration machine (see pics below). Here’s how Kim and I were able to arrive at the club ready to party at 4am (see video below).

Super Paradise Beach

Ever have one of those stories that you just can’t talk about publicly but is SO good you’re dying to tell it. That’s what Super Paradise beach in Mykonos triggers for me. Let me put it this way. Any story that I made up in my adolescent or adult head doesn’t compete with the day I had here. It’s THAT good!

Imagine multimillion dollar yachts that throw anchor to come to party at one of the sexiest stretches of beach on the island. Thatched roof huts shade topless woman drinking ouzo along a gorgeous stretch of turquoise water and white sand beach. Ahhh super paradise! Getting to super paradise beach isn’t the easiest thing to do. It’s on the back side of the island and negotiating the road is not child’s play. We made the grave mistake of taking our scooter here. The real mis-step was trying to drive home after way to many Mojitos. Super Paradise Beach in Mykonos is one spot not to be missed (see pics below).

The Elysium Hotel

Every night Kim and I would rush to the Elsium hotel to watch the sunset. Imagine a huge outdoor rooftop deck that’s filled with the coolest, best looking people partying to cutting edge house music. Now, imagine that before your eyes the sky begins to turn a burnt orange as you watch the sun make it’s daily dip into the med. But, before it does it bathes the white houses on the shore line and makes them look as if god himself has touched them. With a glass of chilled champagne in your hand you toast the Greek Gods above. You pray that you live another day to see that magnificent sun do it’s dance just one more time. As an aside, the Elysium hotel is an mostly gay hotel and you may spot a drag queen (literally) sitting next to you. Here’s a few pics.

Is Mykonos For You? Mykonos Guide Part 2: Where To Stay (hint: the Belvedere Hotel)

20110427-121542.jpg

O.K. so where’s a brother to stay in Mykonos? I’m going to make this Mykonos Guide super easy for you. Just stay at The Belvedere Hotel. No, they’re not paying me to say that. To be honest, they really don’t need me. Let’s start with a quick video to help give you a feel:

From the moment you walk in to this hotel you know that you’ve made the right decision. Imagine, the most magnificent white on white on white on white setting, overlooking the Mediterranean and the smell of bougainvillea surrounding you. Now, imagine the check process with the coolest, greatest looking and REAL people that have ever checked you in to a hotel. Welcome to paradise- Um… I mean, the Belvedere hotel in Mykonos. It’s no secret that I’m not easy to please when it comes to a hotel. There is just something about this place that I can’t quite put my finger on that makes it so extraordinary. It defies any expectation you would ever have.

20110427-122433.jpg

Pull out the moleskin journal you’ve been promising yourself to write in. Grab a glass of Rose’ and let your mind go (see photo below). This became a daily ritual for me for the during the two weeks we stayed at the Belvedere. Yes, two weeks AND it wasn’t long enough. Just sitting on their amazing teak wood deck and gazing out at the island and turquoise ocean is enough to change your life.

20110427-125252.jpg

Maybe you’re a chick and you just want to crash and read “Belle du Jour” (see photo below). Let the sounds and smells of the ocean and soft lounge music take you away. Whatever works. This place intuitively knows how to adapt to your mood.

20110427-010928.jpg

How about a poolside lunch that will send your taste buds into ecstasy (see next two photos below). The Belvedere has managed to take the most simple of ingredients and turn them into a symphony. Fresh grilled vegetables with olive oil and rock salt or a simple hummus with pine nuts that will make you say – shut up!

20110427-012523.jpg

20110427-125741.jpg

When the day’s half over just head back to your room for your disco nap. The moment you walk in your room you’re hit with the smells of the most incredible Korres products. It literally smells like the Greek islands in a bottle. Sit out on your terrace (see below) and breathe the fresh island air.

20110427-015726.jpg

If you’re not ready to leave the hotel just head back down to the pool. The Belvedere magically transforms the pool into Nobu restaurant. Yes, THAT Nobu! He has an outpost here, which I promise you is unlike any Nobu you’ve been to. In fact, when we were there Nobu himself was having dinner with his family (see photo below).

20110427-012316.jpg

I’m not sure if it’s the new friends we’ve made (see photo below of Eleni the rock star goddess at the front desk), or the staff that somehow anticipates every need you have or just simply an amazing hotel in an amazing location that makes the Belvedere Mykonos so incredible, but, honestly who cares. It’s fantastic!

Is Mykonos For You? Mykonos Guide Part 1

20110420-115005.jpg

I’m super biased about Mykonos. In fact, I freaking LOVE the place. So, you are definitely getting a biased opinion. My goal with this three part Mykonos Guide series is to give you the lay of the land and  to help you  make better choices.

OK, Let’s get started...
Tell me how this sounds to you. You wake up around 11am, later than normal, because you spent much of the night before partying. You head down to the pool, grab a cup of coffee and watch the sexy and beautiful outdoor theatre unfold before your eyes. For lunch, you jump on a scooter and head to the far side of the island. You travel down a dirt road that takes you to a hidden beach, where you come upon what can only be described as an ‘in the know restaurant’. The restaurant has about 20 tables which all face the ocean. When you sit down you spot a guy coming out of the water in a wet suit. He’s carrying two octopus, one in each hand, and bringing it into the restaurant to be served. You have a fantastic lunch and a few shots of ouzo later, you head back to your scooter. This time, you’re off to a beach club for some lounge music and too many cocktails. As the sun begins to set you head out once again. Your next destination is a sexy boutique hotel terrace which hangs over the Mediterranean and reveals a sunset the way God intended it. With a glass of champagne in your hand and watching the sun slowly touch the ocean, you reflect on this moment and say to yourself, “this is what life’s supposed to be”!

Does that sound like your thing? Cool. Me too.

To give you an overall feel for the place, have a look at this short video we shot while researching our Mykonos Guide.

In part one of this Mykonos Guide, I really just wanted to give you some overall impressions of Mykonos. In parts two and three we’ll dig a bit deeper and cover hotels, restaurants, and nightlife.

If this Mykonos guide already has you all hot and bothered and ready to head to Mykonos now, then here’s a link to our full Mykonos Guide.

For now, how’s a few pics to tie you over till the next post?

Jet Set Like a Rock Star: Mykonos

Post Written by Rob Murgatroyd. Follow us on Twitter.

super-paradise-mykonos

This is the first installment in the Jet Set Like A Rock Star series.  I couldn’t think of a better destination to kick this series off with than the European summer home of rock star living – Mykonos.  This place has it all.  Whether you want to party or chill (or do both) it’s all here. Here’s our short list to Jet Set Like A Rock Star in Mykonos.

Where to Stay

Here’s our top 2 picks (in priority order).

1. The Belvedere - The ultimate in chic luxury.  Always a scene.  This hotel is amazing in so many ways.  The staff anticipates your needs and always makes you feel like you’re at home and not in some stuffy hotel.  The scene is simple, chic, and sexy.  The location couldn’t be better. It’s at the edge of the port town and within 20 minutes of every beach on the island.  The pool is a who’s who of international tanned hard bodies.

2. Bill and Coo - The sexiest infinity pool in town.  Really.  This is an all suite hotel.  All rooms have fantastic balconies with views of the sea.  Higher class suites have private plunge pools with a small deck to chill and enjoy the sun.  This is a very quiet and very relaxed environment.  Here’s a short video we shot of some dude doing push ups while we’re touring the hotel (couldn’t resist shooting it).  Weird, I know, but it will give you a good idea of what the surroundings of the hotel is like.

Where to Eat

Here’s our top 5 picks (in order of priority).

1. KiKi’s - No electricity.  No sign.  No credit cards.  No reservations.  Just 10 tables.  Totally AMAZING food (did I say amazing).  This fantastic spot is on a bluff overlooking the ocean on Aghios Sostis Beach. DO NOT miss this place.  It is a MUST.  Get the grilled octupus, eggplant and the fresh catch of the day.

2. Nammos - See and be seen lunch/dinner spot on Jet Set Psarou Beach.  Think town and country meets the Greek Isles.  Open air dining overlooking the beach.  Get the to-die-for-caprese salad and fresh fish.  A perfect day at Nammos would be to get a beach chair right in front of the restaurant (if you can), have a late lunch (around 4 p.m.) and watch the action. Here’s a short video we took this summer of Psarou beach to give you a feel for the environment.

3. Gola - This Italian restaurant is the triple threat of food, wine and view.  It has it all. Upscale without being stuffy.  Situated high enough to see Mykonos town all light up at night.  Eat dinner outside, around its beautiful pool and under the stars.  An experience you will never forget.

4. Belvedere Club - I hate to put a hotel restaurant on this list, but this one is too good to leave out.  It’s a lunch spot pool side at the super chic Belvedere Hotel.  Simple, stylish with great food and amazing vibe.  Get the fresh bread with olive oil and black salt (from Cyprus) to start. Then move on to Greek salad (hands down the best on the island) and skewers of chicken, beef or veggies.  After lunch browse the Mykonos outpost of Scoop (the hip New York/South Beach clothing store).

5. Interni - Think Southern California vibe meets the Greek Isles.  A blend of traditional Greek and International cuisine.  Very cool design with an equally sexy crowd.  Go for dinner and stay for the drinks when the restaurant flips into a club filled with a very young and cool crowd.

* Note about dinner: Do not show up to any restaurants on the island before 11 p.m.- you’ll be the only one in the restaurant.

Where to Party

Here’s my top 4 picks (in order of priority).

1. Super Paradise - One of the most famous beach party spots in the world.  This is likely where Mykonos gets its bad boy party reputation.  A great mix of young, old, famous, not so famous, gay and straight.  Think stripper poles on the beach, topless sun bathing, off the chain partying and fun (crazy) people letting loose and enjoying life.  This is a personal favorite of mine – and for really good reason.  I so wish I could tell you why, but Kim just will not let me tell you.  The sad part is – you would really want to know – believe me.  Sorry.  Try an email her and see if she’ll tell you.  Good luck.  Seriously this place can bite you.  Take a taxi and avoid drinking and scooting.  Go on Saturday at around 5 pm and let loose. Here’s a short clip of the action on Super Paradise.

2. Astra - This is an exclusive, sexy lounge right in the center of Mykonos town.  Sit outside, sip fantastic cocktails and people watch or go inside and dance on the mini-dance floor; don’t be surprised if you spot a celebrity or two.  Here’s a short video of Mykonos town.

3.  Caprice - This tiny sea front bar is packed ALL the time.  It’ll be a flash back to high school/college.  You’ll know the words to every song.  It’s a little silly, but it’s a lot of fun and filled with locals and tourists alike.  Stop on your way in from the beach or on your way out to a club.  Watch the video below (Caprice is the white bar).

4. Cavo Paradiso - World famous DJ’s spinning while you watch the sun rise from the sea. Party kids, hip club goers and those that just want to see the sun rise with 1000 of their closest friends.  Also check out this video we shot at Cavo this past summer.  Check out this clip of us getting up at 3am to watch the sunrise at Cavo with D.J. Louie Vega.
