The Other America: Punta Del Este For New Year’s

I wanted to write a quick post to answer a few questions that Kim and I have been getting about where to go for New Year’s Eve. This year we’re going to Cartagena, Colombia, so we’ll let you know how that goes. But, I can’t recommend Punta del Este enough for New Year’s Eve.

I like to call Punta del Este – the other America. Just head due south (for us North Americans) and boom- you’re there. The most obvious questions is- why go?

Here’s why….imagine sexy people, great parties, long summer days (during Xmas and New Year’s) and fantastic restaurants. It’s just incredible! It’s a who’s who of the jet set world. This tiny fishing village becomes an international destination from mid November to mid January (with the peak being New Year’s Eve).

It’s mostly made up of people coming from all over South America (the bulk of people coming from neighboring Buenos Aires). If you have ever partied with South Americans before- you’ll know why I’m recommending it for New Year’s Eve.

Your day will likely start at around 2 p.m. with the beach party going on till about 9 p.m.! From there you’ll need a disco nap, until around 11 p.m. The restaurants won’t really get going until around midnight, which means you’ll probably hit the clubs at around 2 a.m.

At around 4 a.m. everyone meets in the streets and neutralizes the alcohol with these amazing pastries from a shop called called Medulna Calientes, which are AMAZING.

Then the cycle begins again at the beach around 2 p.m. That’s a quick snap shot. If you want to see our full Punta del Este video go here.
